Fall 2016: A Little Bit Country

img_6914When we’re up at our cabin, we just love going to Sugar House Creamery in Upper Jay, NY.

img_6639C’mon, Bowie. Let’s get some good eats!

img_6939With lots of work these days (not complaining!), we were undecided about heading up to our cabin in the Adirondacks. But Chris was anxious about everything he needs to get done outside before winter sets in, and I was on Election overload so more than ready for minimal social media, long walks, some antiquing, a soul-reviving getaway.

Sunday was a mix of sunshine, clouds and blustery wind, making it the perfect day for shopping at our favorite local farm store, Sugar House Creamery, plus some “runny round” for Bowie on Marcy Field.

Given the changeability of the weather, I went with layers. If you haven’t discovered Uniqlo’s HEATTECH line, you need to. The pieces are super lightweight yet super warm. You can layer them under everything. I really do wear them all Fall/Winter long, from city to country. The cashmere sweater was a Saturday score from the TJ Maxx in Plattsburgh. It’s the luxuriously soft, kind of swingy, cozy chic you want and need up in the mountains. I love the back detailing. I will definitely pair it with skinny jeans and over-the-knee boots for a country cocktail party or two. My ultra-light but big-time warm plaid down vest is always a must. The jeans were so distressed I had them patched, then frayed the hem and now love them even more. My other Go-Tos: mini cross body which you also saw here, orange hunting beanie (a must up there in November!) and Tom’s hiking boots that are the perfect combination of fashion and function.

Hope you like this look as much as I liked putting it together and putting it through its paces in the beyond beautiful place where we get to spend our weekends. And hopefully retirement…one of these days.

Beanie: Carharrt, I wore orange for obvious reasons but it comes in lots of colors. A great stocking stuffer.

Down Vest: (old, Uniqlo) but they have lots of other colors and sizes available…on sale!

Sweater: Cynthia Rowley (new, in store and online), plus TJ Maxx has a huge selection of other designers, colors and styles. Dangerous!

Jeans: (Gap, old and DIY-customized) but like these and these

Boots: Tom’s  Did you notice the cute red soles to match the laces? And rustic back detailing?? A lot of bang for your buck. (And yup, that’s a hint of post walk dirt on them.)

  1. How charming!
Almost looks like the French countryside.
Just loved getting in the mood for cold weather and cozy weekends via your outfits and scenery, Mary Paula.
    I so miss cold weather.
    Here it is hot-hot, hot-warm, hot-cool, hot-cold (?)
Loved Bowie’s little flying ear and those hiking boots!
What is a Dutch Knuckle? 🙂

    1. Thanks, Regina. So glad you enjoyed this post. We so love it up there. Dutch Knuckle is a Sugar House Creamery specialty — a hard, kind of cheddar-y cheese that’s absolutely addictive.
