Leopard Love!

This fashion cat can never get enough of animal prints and embellishments, especially leopard. For me it’s really a neutral, albeit one that can take a tame outfit to wilder territory. For this look, I doubled down on the leopard with two of my new wardrobe loves — this adorable cat-eared hat and tailored jacket. Both are oh-so-cozy. Throw in a favorite pair of OTK boots, and you’re ready to take a walk on the wild side!

When it comes to leopard, my love knows no bounds. I also have my eye on some new block heel booties, as well as a stunning (and expensive) belt. We shall see. In the meantime…this outfit. I got to test drive the jacket at a recent shoot. It was part of the production wardrobe and after a couple of early morning hours on location on the streets of Brooklyn, I was pretty well frozen. Luckily our stylist is a doll and let me borrow this jacket. If I could have kept it I would! So I did the next best thing…and bought it on sale! With its fitted silhouette and lapel collar it’s a classic I’ll be happy to cuddle up in year after year.

Even though I’m a “dog person,” I could not resist this hat! How cute are the ears. Honestly, it made people smile and compliment me on it all day. It’s warm without being heavy, and perhaps best of all, did NOT give me hat hair. It’s actually so cute I’d wear it on a “bad hair” day and just keep it on. Definitely a mood elevator.

For the rest of my look, I went with slightly distressed, high-waisted skinnies and a dark floral popover blouse with smocked detailing that I’m also pretty obsessed with. While it dressed up my jeans (perfect for tucking into boots), it would also look great with a black leather skirt or black velvet jeans. I’m thinking it has to go to at least one holiday party! My OTK boots are not new and were definitely an investment a few years back, but they are so sleek, so flattering, so still in style, and so comfortable I could almost wear them every day. For a winter date night, I’d pair them with black tights and an LBD. The floral embroidery on this fun black bag was the perfect nod to my top. Not matchy-matchy, more a complimentary pop of color and pattern.

So what about you? Are you going to unleash your inner leopard?? Let me know!

Plush Crush

We finally had a chilly day last week. One. But it was the perfect opportunity to shoot this adorable faux fur jacket. I first spied it online, then tried it on in-store, then finally broke down and ordered it online. And I LOVE it. It is so cute and so cozy I want more cold weather. Pronto. I’m wearing a “borrowed from the boys” kind of outfit with it, but it will look super when paired with a velvet dress or…just about anything.

OK…are you in love with this jacket yet? It’s neutral color paired with an eye-catching patchwork design made it a must-have for me. It’s whimsical and chic all at once. And it’s design also helps you avoid the look of a walking, talking stuffed animal. It will look great with everything from distressed jeans to a dressed-up evening out.

The rest of my look is basically a low key, tomboy-ish take on pants and a top. In case you haven’t noticed, check patterns are everywhere this Fall. I wanted a new pair of pants that were on trend but wouldn’t break the bank. And this pair delivered. I’m still jones-ing for a Gucci belt, but this studded leather option with a bold buckle will more than fit the bill until I go for it. If you don’t own a jean or chambray shirt, you should. They are great however you style them — understated here but how cute with a metallic skirt or leather/pleather leggings! To finish off this look, I did shop my closet.

It took awhile for these two-tone booties purchased a couple of years ago to grow on me. But guess what? Now it’s love. And this bag was a crazy splurge 8 or 9 years ago. Then, I used it daily. Hence, it’s distressed look. But guess what…that’s the fashion vibe now. Which means this investment piece more than paid for itself. So… I guess if I’m offering any pearls of Fashion wisdom, it’s splurge on the shoes and bag.

Jacket: (Zara) but check out this and this, too!

Mood Indigo

Maybe it’s because I’m the mother of 3 boys, cough…young men, that I’m drawn to the color blue. Not to mention their (and my husband’s) school colors over the years! Good thing blue is such a deep and versatile color in the best ways possible. With its spectrum from sky light to inky dark, there’s a shade or two or three that’s flattering to everyone. At the moment, electric blue is on the fashion radar, but it’s a bit too intense for me. I’m more of a navy and dusty blue girl. I believe fashion is about being inspired by a trend and making it your own. So find the shade that suits your mood, the moment, and just be true to your blue.

I pretty much LOVE every piece in this outfit, but this whimsical sweater is one of my newest purchases for Fall. It’s a classic crewneck updated with playful, faux fur pom poms. (We all know I am OBSESSED with pom poms!) In keeping with the playful theme, the frayed flounced hem adds an unexpected finish to these faded denim jeans. I can’t tell you how many people compliment me on them. And they are so fun to wear. There’s more faux to show, too. This plush trench is a great transitional coat. Love that it’s leopard with the twist of blue, and the brass buttons polish it off perfectly. And this bucket bag in black-and-blue faux fur is going to be a Fall-into-Winter favorite. Last but not least, these gorgeous navy velvet booties. They are a sophisticated alternative to basic black, and their block heel makes them eminently walkable. Plus they look equally great with pants or skirts. How are you going to “do blue?” I’d love to know!

Sweater: (Banana Republic, also in grey AND on sale!) fun alternatives here and here

Jeans: (Citizens for Humanity) leopard skinnies here, more affordable flounce options here and here

Coat: (old, Band of Outsiders) but love this and this

Bag: (Zara) super cute options here and here

Boots: (old, Stuart Weitzman) but this year’s version and more affordable here, here and here

A warm and fuzzy feeling

This Fall the fur is flying…off the runways and out of the stores. From luxury pelts to fabulous and faux, there is something furry for everyone. For this look I decided to accessorize with a new fave bag and slides, both trimmed in fun faux fur. Can I just say this raffia-and-fur bag is about the cutest thing! And these slides look luxe and feel like you’re walking on pillows. I forgot all about my plantar fascitis!

Going on the Llama!

Is it crazy to build your whole look around a pair of shoes? Not if it’s Shoesday Tuesday! When it came to these llama-detailed velvet sneaks, it was love at first sight for me. But not buy at first sight. I hemmed and hawed for a couple of weeks, then panicked they would sell out. So…a few secs on my Mac, and they were mine. And now we’re together forever, wherever they take me! I mean seriously…are they not the cutest.

C’est Cool

New York Fashion Week came and went once again. My closest brush to its spotlight was long ago in the early 80s when I walked in one show. This year? I wasn’t invited to any shows, which were by and large panned by most fashion critics. But I did love seeing all the street style — some of it inspiring, some outlandish. All in all, I was feeling the need to step a bit out of my comfort zone. Perhaps forego my usual flats in favor of some heels. I’d also recently learned that my vision has actually improved, so I would need new prescription glasses. No better time than now to try out some pretty fashion-forward sunnies and see just how I felt about going bolder, bigger. The answer? I’m not sure they are really “me.” But I did get a kick out of trying out a new look, even for just one day.

Santa Fe Stroll

While I would have loved to have been strolling the streets of NYC for Fashion Week (next year?!?), I was in Santa Fe for a “Girls Getaway.” Did we eat too much? Yes! Shop too much? Some of us! Drink too much? I’ll never tell! Laugh too much? Not possible! I only packed one dress, this one, because most of the restaurants are on the casual side. But I was super excited to wear it for the first time. And now that I’m back home I plan to wear this lovely lacy dress at least a few more times in the weeks ahead, layering a leather jacket or bomber or cardigan over it as needed. So you may be seeing this dress again!

The Art of Black and White

IMG_3775There’s no other combination that’s cleaner, chicer, more graphic than black and white. However you put it together, it just works. You can dress it up, dress it down. You could probably wear black and white every day of the week and never wear it the same way twice. (Hmmm…possible future blog post?)

As for Art? Black and white makes a powerful statement there too. Yes, the messaging in this streetwise piece is pretty heavy, but I’m glad its creator found his voice.

First Fall Haul!

IMG_3752Even though it’s still t-shirt and sandal weather, I’m starting to think about Fall. And this is my first haul! Some bought in-store, some online. Not a ton of stuff, but some key pieces that I see myself wanting to wear again…and again. Where to start? Hard to say. I love each and every one of these AFFORDABLE finds.

Slide into Summer

IMG_1344It’s officially Summer! What could be easier than to slide into your next favorite sandal. As you can see from my round-up, I’m mostly going for flats. Which is really how I live. I like to be able to make tracks when I need to, and flat sandals afford me that freedom. That being said, you gotta go for heels every now and then. And my block heel option gives your legs that lift while allowing you true walkability.
