Skirting the Rules

Once the weather warms up (will it ever???), skirts become one of my Spring-into-Summer wardrobe go-tos. It’s amazing how many looks you can create with one piece — whether it’s an expected combo or a surprising one, dressed up or dressed down. This striped skirt ticks all the boxes for me — pattern, color, fit and movement. It’s a keeper that’s for sure.

Most often, my looks are a mix of high/low — in other words, stylish steals and strategic designer pieces. But I’m breaking that rule here with a head-to-toe look that’s firmly planted on the steal side of fashion. And why not? When stores like H&M and Target deliver both fresh style and fabulous prices, you can’t go wrong with a little wardrobe refresh. Any one of the pieces in this look would be a versatile addition, altogether they came in at under $150! (One caveat, with fast fashion you really have to move fast. A few of these pieces are already sold out. If you’re in-store and see something you like/love, get it. If you change your mind you can always return it.)

First this midi skirt! A pleated skirt is a pretty traditional silhouette, but not when it’s boldly striped on the bias. With its black/blue/white color combo, this striped skirt is going to go with so many different tops and shoes. Here, I’ve paired it with a tongue-in-chic Rolling Stones tee. They’re one of my all-time favorite bands, and now I’m going to rock this statement tee is with everything from skirts to white jeans to denim cut-offs.

Speaking of denim. Surely you have a favorite blue denim jacket, bit how about refreshing your options with a white one? This white denim jacket is just slightly oversized, so it’s got a casual but not sloppy vibe, you can easily roll up the sleeves, and even layer a sweater underneath should you need some added warmth. I’m loving it!

Inspired by the visual impact of color-blocking, I grabbed this top-handle bag the moment I saw it. Plus that pop of orange was too fun to resist. (Just for comparison, check out this uber expensive version.) I purchased these patchwork denim Mary Janes months ago, but they’re still available online for under $20! They’re super chic, super comfortable. If you like them too, run, don’t walk!!

I don’t know about your Spring weather, but ours has been so fickle. In between days (and days) of clouds and rain, we were lucky to get a sunny day for this shoot. And I for one can’t wait for lots more of those!

Skirt: (H&M, sold out online but you may still find in-store) Also like this and this.

Tee: (H&M, also sold out online but I’ve spotted it in-store.) I’d rock this or this, too.

Jacket: (H&M) Loving this cropped and frayed option and this boxier top-stitched one.

Bag: (A New Day x Target, sold out) Similar here and here.

Shoes: (Who What Wear x Target, on clearance but lots of sizes still available.) Have my eye on these (glitter heels and 40% off with code STEPITUP!), too. (Posting this from Switzerland so hopefully price will show up for you in your country’s currency…)
