Brink of Pink

Even though it’s not yet August, NYC will be awash in head-to-toe black before we know it. So for as long as I can, I’m going to embrace as much color as I can. I’ll make my looks more transitional with long sleeves instead of short or sleeveless and pants instead of shorts. And because there will be still some scorching days ahead, I’m definitely going to keep the pedicures up. And break out every pair of my toe-baring shoes and sandals, before they’re packed away until Summer comes again. Or a tropical Winter vacay!

Little Black Dress…Not

Everyone needs a go-to LBD…or two! What’s fun about this look is that it’s actually two separate pieces that create the effect of a versatile summer dress, BUT each piece can go it alone. Imagine this one shoulder ruffle top with your favorite pair of white or blue jeans. And this eyelet skirt with a white or even neon (!) tank now and a chunky cotton sweater come Fall. Think you get where I’m going. When I shop I’m always on the hunt for something new and different, but also something that will be an “ADD” to other pieces that I already own.

One Good Gingham Deserves Another, Part 1

Gingham was on fashion’s sizzle radar last spring and summer (as seen in this post), and it’s back bigger than ever. For this dressed-up look (can you say date night?), I’ve paired two black-and-white separates in different sized checks. I didn’t buy these pieces to wear together, but when fashion kismet strikes, you go for it. That being said, Part 2 of OGGDA is going to feature each of these pieces as the focal point of a more casual look. All of which goes to say, buy (and wear!) what you love. Especially if you love how it expands your fashion horizons. Check!

Birds of a Feather

I know I’ve been hyping stripes this summer, but I’ve gotta give it up to the pure fashion fun of feathers too. They’re what take this slouchy graphic top from comfy to full-on chic. And a top this bold deserves the perfect backdrop. Luckily Jersey City is full of the most colorful and creative street art, so I think we succeeded on that front. Come take a walk on the wild side with me…

Lighten Up!

Finally, summer weather is here. And that means we can break out our whites. As long as you switch up textures, it’s a cool, understated look I love from head-to-toe. For this look, I shopped my closet. Because who doesn’t have a selection of white pieces? You could easily flip this look with a white lace blouse, white jeans, flat white sandals, and an of-the-moment beaded bag. As much as I love the NEW, I’m really trying to be mindful of adding new things to my wardrobe. It’s a good watch-out for all of us!

Chambray All Day

Do you live in jeans? I pretty much do. I recently did a closet cleanse and sent about 10 pairs off to consignment. I’m not missing them, but denim is my (almost) daily go-to. Even for work. Of course it helps that I’m in Advertising but still…So in an effort to break out, not break away, from what’s become a wardrobe habit, I was pretty excited about slipping on this chambray chemise. And I have to say, I LOVED wearing it.

Somewhere Over The Rainbow Stripe

Did you ever read a “Series of Unfortunate Events” with your kids? It’s a multi-book collection about three orphans who survive one calamity after another. While the past 10 days for me haven’t been that dramatic, they have been pretty stressful. I took on probably one too many freelance writing projects, am rehabbing from a bout of Sciatica, threw out my iPhone adapter (Why, Apple?!?), and had to undergo a pretty invasive medical procedure (fingers crossed on  that one!). So…looking to rainbows, and wearing them, made me feel more hopeful, more confident, more happy.

A Few of My Favorite Spring Things

Here in JC and NYC, Mother Nature continues to be ambivalent about Spring. So while Summer is officially only about a month away, we’re still wishing she’d make up her mind and gift us with some steady sunshine and warmer temps. As you might guess, it’s made it pretty tough to break out my new fashion favorites and share them with you all. Until this past Sunday…

Mother’s Day Musing

When I became pregnant for the first time, the first person (aside from my husband Chris!) I shared the news with was my Mother. Having made it through the teen and college years, we were solidly BFFs. I so looked forward to all the years we would share as Mommy and Nana. But that was not to be. Shortly after my first son Pierre was born, my Mother was given a diagnosis of stage 4 pancreatic cancer. I’ll never know if it was life going and life growing, but I became pregnant with my second son Spencer while Mom was in remission. His birth and her decline were inevitably intertwined.  I was 7 months pregnant with Chanler, my third and last son, when she died. She had suffered so much, for so many months, that we knew she was going to a better place. Still, the huge gaping hole of being Mother-less as a new Mom loomed before me. I mentally and physically struggled to read the 23rd Psalm at her her Memorial Service. And to picture my life, and my children’s lives, without her. I was so used to talking to her every day. Really. But now I had lost my best friend. Not a day, a week, a month, a year goes by without me wishing she could have seen (and supported and hopefully approved of) me as a Mom. And more importantly truly known and enjoyed my three amazing sons. Every year I so wish I could wish her “Happy Mother’s Day” just one more time.

Feeling Kind Of Frida

This simple yet sophisticated off-the-shoulder dress is the only new piece in this look, making it a stunning example of how one fashion find can bring new life to the wardrobe you already have. And when it came to shooting this post, I knew the perfect Jersey City mural to be our backdrop. It was almost as if this spot had been waiting for us.
