Playful Plaid

Just as gingham is a quintessential summer pattern, plaid is all about fall. Historically plaid has been a checkered or tartan twilled cloth, typically made of wool. The Scottish word “plaide” dates from the 16th century. Think kilts (Outlander!), scarves and windblown moors. And yes, school uniforms! Maybe that’s why I loved this classic pattern even as a high schooler? This fall, plaid is making a serious style statement in unexpected color combinations and silhouettes. And I for one couldn’t be happier.

I hope you think this plaid top is as fabulous as I do. Its palette of blue, white and grey with a pop of orange is what first caught my eye. But I also loved its fitted yet asymmetric lines with a little side pleating thrown in for good measure. Plus, it’s got a hint of stretch so it moves with you in all the right ways. For now, the fact that it’s sleeveless is perfect, especially since September is sure to have some scorching days. Once it get’s cooler, I’ll layer this plaid top over a crisp white button down or a charcoal turtleneck. I know it’s going to be a piece I’ll happily turn to again and again. And did I mention it’s quite affordable, too?

For the rest of my look, I shopped my closet. You’ve seen these fun, flirty ruffled jeans in this, this and this post. Trust me, while they were a bit of a spurge I’ve lost count with how many times I’ve worn them. Quite simply, I love how they fit and how they make me feel. And they dress up or down like a dream. Obviously we’ve got to talk about these white booties — which I’ve already styled here and here. White boots, booties and shoes stepped onto the scene in a big way about this time last year, and they don’t seem to be fading from fashion’s radar any time soon. For me, they’re the yin to black’s yang. And just as versatile. And the block heel means these white boots were made for walking!

I finished off my look with this favorite two-tone leather clutch, a duo of velvet-and-rhinestone bracelets and a bold rose gold watch with chunky black leather band. As you can see, wearing plaid gave me a serious case of happy feet. Can you blame me?
