Blue Belle

When I fully embraced being a Boy Mom of three, I found myself living in a world of blue. Blue painted bedrooms, blue clothing and accessories, even blue strollers for my crew of blue-eyed boys. I often asked myself if I was overdoing it, but my friends who were Girl Moms seemed similarly immersed in pinks and purples. And truth be told, I rarely gravitated to those colors before then, and now rarely pick anything pink for my wardrobe. And purple? Pretty much a no-go…ever.

Before I get into the details of this look, let’s talk about the psychology of the color blue. On the most obvious level, blue ties closely to the sea and sky. And in this shoot, street art! Stability, harmony, peace, calm and trust are some of the feelings blue has been found to evoke in multiple studies. And now I’m wondering if that was the subliminal impetus for cocooning in blue amidst a bustling household of boys…? If so, it kinda worked. Marketing studies have also shown that huge brands — like Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Walmart, and Oral B to name a few — choose blue as an anchor color to help consumers associate their brands with trust, quality and safety. Not sure how safe social media is these days (I’m talking to you Twitter!) but…

So on a lighter note, let’s talk this breezy, blue-y outfit that you can easily recreate your own way — with new pieces this post inspires or by shopping your closet for pieces you already own. Taking it from the top, you already know I love eyelet in the summer (as seen in my last post), and I love this shirt so much that I bought it in 3 colors! It’s sweet without being saccharine, cool as can be in cotton, and dresses up or down on the daily.

In cooler months I’d anchor a blue top with a black bottom (as seen in this post), but these days a lighter base feels right. How fun are these patchwork wide-leg jeans. They are the perfect combination of a super comfortable silhouette and understated style. Again, they are a neutral wardrobe addition you can pair with almost any color.

When it came to accessories, I picked lightweight rattan earrings and a woven bag that added a touch of texture, a fave versatile belt, and blue patent ballet flats for a pop of color and shine.

  1. Funny you mention having three boys and being surrounded by blue …. I think that happened to me as well. I still gravitate to blues. Very fun pants!

  2. I love blue too! And, depending on the shade, I agree it’s perfect for all seasons. Can’t go wrong 💙
