Layer on the Warmth

I’m writing this post up at our Adirondack cabin where we’ve finally achieved double digits temperature-wise. And to think I thought it was chilly when we shot this look! Well, either way, it’s definitely fuzzy coat weather.

If you’ve been following the blog for a while, you know I made a pretty serious shift in 2020 from constant shopping to shopping my closet with the occasional more mindful purchase to add a pop of freshness. (And some excitement amidst pandemic lockdown.) This cycle continues in 2021.

I also did some pretty serious wardrobe purging, with my best designer pieces going to The RealReal and fast fashion ones going to resellers like Crossroads Trading and Buffalo Exchange. They are all open for safe in-person drop-offs or contactless pick-up — whatever works for you. And whatever they don’t take, I’ve donated to our nearby Adirondack thrift store which supports a roster of local charities and non-profits.

Have I occasionally wished I had something back? I can honestly count the times on one hand. I’ve actually enjoyed streamlining my wardrobe so much that I’m about to do another round. I want everything in my closet to be something I love…and love wearing. Like each and every piece that makes up this look!

This faux fur jacket has to be one of my all time favorite sale scores. It’s the perfect combination of cold-weather cozy and wintery chic. A lightly tailored silhouette, notched collar and toggle closures elevate it into a versatile outerwear option I’ll snuggle into again and again. If you’re in the market for a new winter jacket, I love the Avec Les Filles brand. And I’ve linked some great options below.

A merino or cashmere pullover in a classic color like camel is my go-to top option this time of year but here again I look for some detail, like this lurex intarsia heart, that adds that special twist. This sweater also has a split tail hem which lets you tuck it in or wear it out for a more loosely layered look. Again, more versatility.

To shake things up, I stepped out of my jeans-every-day routine and into these high-rise bootcut corduroy pants. In pink! With retro-inspired details like front patch pockets and a flattering, hint-of-stretch fit they really are a favorite new addition. Since they’re on major sale, I may have to indulge in the other color they come in — a cheery, almost orange called cedar. Linked below, of course.

For accessories, I reached for a beanie in a pinkish melange knit, my vintage Louis Vuitton crossbody (thank you, Chris!) and western-styled leopard booties. And last, but definitely not least, a don’t-leave-home-without-it mask. Not just any mask. 100% of net proceeds from this AO x Donald Robertson limited edition mask will be donated to the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiative aimed at helping Black creatives and professionals in the American fashion industry. Staying safe and showing support make this mask a win-win must-have.

The one layer you can’t see is my Uniqlo Airism scoop neck short-sleeved tee. I have it in a couple of colors and couldn’t do winter without it. The smooth and stretchy material feels great on your skin and keeps any “sweater itches” at bay. Designed with quick dry, odor control, moisture-wicking, anti-bacterial COOL TOUCH technology. In other words, a state-of-the-art layering essential.

Jacket: (old, Avec Les Filles) but love this mid-length option and this black-and-white houndstooth stunner. Both on sale!

Sweater: (J. Crew, on sale but limited sizes.) I also heart this, this and this.

Pants: (Pilcro) Wide-leg Crop version here and a go-with-everything black version here (on sale).

Beanie: (old, J. Crew) Similar here, here and here (under $20!).

Bag: (Louis Vuitton, vintage) No bargain but best priced LV option I could find online here. Love this well-priced leopard and on-sale snake.

Boots: (old, Vince) Super cute alternatives here, here and here.

Mask: (Alice & Olivia x Donald Robertson)
