Switching Up My Smoothie

Good morning, sunshine! Here’s a delicious and healthful new Smoothie recipe that I’ve worked into my breakfast rotation. If you’re new to Life’s a Spritz, you might not know that I’ve been having one Smoothie version or another for…yikes…decades. (As seen here and here.) For me, it’s the fastest, easiest, most nutritious way to get my day going. If you’re not on the Smoothie train, you just might want to hop on once you taste this one!

When it comes to breakfast, I’m a creature of habit. And have been since my 30s. Turns out that might not be as pointlessly boring as you might think. According to Entrepreneur.com, one of the things successful people do is keep a quota of the decisions they have to make, so they only have to worry about the important ones. Deciding what to have for breakfast is one of those decisions. In an interview with Vanity Fair back while he was in office, President Barack Obama famously told journalist Michael Lewis, “I’m trying to pare down decisions. I don’t want to make decisions about what I’m eating or wearing. Because I have too many other decisions to make.”

So..ahem…I am not trying to compare myself to President Obama! But when I was 37, I had 3 sons under the age of 4, was mourning my Mother’s death, had a full-time job, a multi-hour daily commute, and a home renovation we were finishing. The last thing I needed to think about in the morning was breakfast. And it worked. I could actually walk around the house sipping my Smoothie and get the boys ready for school and myself (and the Hubs) ready for work. Sit down and enjoy a meal? There’s always lunch or dinner.

But if you prefer or have time to prepare something else (healthy!) for breakfast, this Smoothie is also a great “alternative” meal option. I had it for lunch the other day. And it kept me going until dinner.

CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER BANANA SMOOTHIE

Add all ingredients to a Ninja or other blender. Pulse for 5 secs three times, then blend on High.

1 cup unsweetened nut milk (I love Milkadamia or Trader Joe’s Almond Cashew & Macadamia Nut Beverage. Organic option if available.)

1/2 Banana ( I like to peel, pre-cut and freeze for quicker prep.)

Organic Vanilla Protein Pea Powder, 1 scoop (I’ve tried a few. In my humble opinion, you have to go for Vanilla. Plain Pea Powder Protein has a serious aftertaste. I like Bob’s Red Mills (complete with Chia Seeds and Probiotics!).

Organic Smooth Peanut Butter, 1 Tbsp

Cocoa Powder (All Natural or Organic), 1 Tbsp

Fage Greek 0% Yogurt (no sugar, no fat!), 1/2 cup

Hemp Heart Seeds, 1 Tbsp

Flax/Chia Seed Blend (I pre-mix this), 1 Tbsp (optional)

Let me know if you give this Smoothie recipe a try. Or any of my other recipes. Or your own!

Approx. 350-375 calories (Depending if you add all seed suggestions.)

  1. Sounds delish, and smart with one less decision. I should try before my son takes his ninja back to school. : )

  2. You’re right about keeping things simple in areas of our lives where we can streamline the decision making! I feel like I live with decision fatigue a lot of the time.
Thanks for the recipe. I’ll try it!
