Closet Classics

While many of the runway looks from this most recent cycle of fashion weeks were pretty over the top (IMHO), I was taken with the high quality, low key chic of both attendees and wannabes. Non-trend trends appear to be having a moment, and as we move from winter to spring, streamlining that wardrobe transition with classic options feels more appealing than ever.

When it came to shooting this post, we definitely lucked out with some unseasonably mild February weather. And trust me, when changing outfits on the fly (or in the car!) you won’t hear any complaints from yours truly. But this shift in the weather was the perfect time to highlight the versatile options we all can reach for again and again, season after season.

Nothing beats this Burberry trench, purchased over 15 years ago, for lasting luxe. It started out four inches longer, but about 10 years ago I had it shortened to just above my knees — a length I find easier to wear with a variety of looks. It also has a removable quilted liner that can be packed and even worn separately as a vest, making it an outstanding outerwear option (onboard and off) for many a trip — especially ones that combine business with vacay. And the studs? I added them on a whim years ago only to see they’re making a comeback — as seen on this current Prada trench, no less. At the time of purchase, this coat was a “new job” splurge, but it’s been well worth it.

Next up? A menswear inspired button-up. Since my closet is already stocked with a capsule collection in white cotton, I opted to step out of the box with this relaxed fit, two-toned shirt from Donni. I’ve been impressed and inspired by this LA-based brand’s story. Rooted in comfort, Donni is all about elevated essentials with special details. And since this shirt combines blue and black, it basically doubles the wearability!

Lately I’ve been rotating between straight and flared jeans, and for this outfit I went with flared. It’s a subtle difference, but I felt it balanced out the silhouette just a bit better. If you’ve been a regular blog follower, you know I have my denim faves. My top three are Madewell, Mother and Paige. Over the years I’ve found these three brands to be very consistent in their quality and fit across a variety of styles. And this comes in particularly handy when I’m shopping online sales and want to snag a popular item before it sells out.

For accessories, I kept the classics coming. Cameo and pearl earrings, a statement belt you’ve seen in post after post, monogrammed crossbody, and buttery-soft loafers with a touch of gleaming hardware. Alone or all together, these pieces are easy to wear, easy to pair, and have the power to polish off a myriad of looks.

I guess you could say the time for timeless is…now.

  1. Classics are like old friends you can turn to again and again. Adding the blue/black shirt gives your look just the right amount of an easy update. Love it!
