Summer is made for vacation. But apparently today’s air travel is not. And that’s sparked the trend for packing carry-on luggage only. I am an inveterate over-packer, but with the right game plan in terms of versatile pieces, even I can travel lighter, smarter, chicer. Or at least I’m determined to try!
So what will I pack?
The polo shirt trend is still going strong in 2023. And this ever-popular preppy staple has gotten a major style upgrade in recent years. Now offered in countless fits, fabrics and colors (as seen in black in this post), finding a fashionable option that’s right for you is easier, and more affordable, than ever. This is a great top to wear in-flight for a polished but comfy look, washable/dryable anywhere, and ready to be dressed up or down.
Love this “liquid silk” maxi skirt. It’s literally called the “Dreamer,” and I can attest that it looks and feels like a dream. Believe it or not, I tried pulling it up into a strapless dress silhouette, and it worked! Cinch it with a belt, add a lightweight wrap or jacket and I’d be ready for even a fancy dinner out.
I kept my accessories simple and versatile, too. This little clutch is a Target steal and comes with a crossbody strap as well. When packing, I’d fill it with jewelry and even a couple of thongs. And these sporty sandals offer both a touch of chic and hours of walkable comfort. They’re so lightweight and flexible, I could fit them into even the tightest spot. They’d also be great to wear through security and on to the plane, simply adding a pair of socks to stay warm during the flight.
When it comes to packing, I’m a firm believer in the space-saving power of rolling your clothes. Knit tops are a no-brainer, and for something more delicate like this skirt, I’d roll it up in a dry cleaning bag for a wrinkle-free arrival. I promise it works! And let’s face it, most hotel rooms and Airbnbs come equipped with an iron.
We have two weeks booked at the beach in August, and I won’t be flying there. But I will be bringing these summer vacation must-haves with me. Happy travels wherever you’re headed in the weeks ahead!

I love the challenge of traveling light! As you mentioned, rolling is essential but also try stuffing some items less prone to wrinkle inside sandals, shoes or sneakers. Call me crazy but every cubic inch counts! ✈️
Great tip, Elisa. I too stuff socks or even tights into shoes and boots.
